"Sati" means a virtuous woman. A woman who dies burning herself on her husbands funeral fire was considered most virtuous, and was believed to directly go to heaven, redeeming all the forefathers rotting in hell, by this "meritorious" act.

OMG that still happens?? Maybe they dont see it as suicide...but forcing sumone to do sucha thing...being burnt alive... :oh

Old practices like these still happen in villages far away from civilisation...thats probably why..noone can stop or prevent them from happening. Its not right.
